FAQ

TDS — Old Act vs New Act 2025

What changed in TDS under the New Income Tax Act 2025?
The New Act (effective FY 2026-27) renumbers all TDS sections — e.g., Salary 192 → 392(1), Rent 194I → 393(1)[2], Professional Fees 194J → 393(1)[6(iii)], Cash Withdrawal 194N → 393(3)[5]. It also introduces unified Payment Codes (1001–1067 series) for challans and returns, replacing section-wise narration.
Are TDS rates changed in the new Act?
Most rates remain the same (e.g., 194C contractors 1%/2%, 194J professional 10%, 194IA property 1%). The key change is the new section numbering under Section 393 and new Payment Codes. Always confirm the rate applicable for your transaction.
What is the due date for TDS payment?
TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the following month. For TDS deducted in March, the deadline is 30th April. Late payment attracts interest u/s 201(1A).
What are the TDS return due dates?
Quarterly: Q1 by 31st July, Q2 by 31st October, Q3 by 31st January, Q4 by 31st May. Late filing leads to fees u/s 234E (₹200/day).
Which form applies to me — 138 or 140?
138 = TDS on salary. 140 = TDS on all non-salary payments (contractors, rent, professional fees). Under the new Act, these continue with updated Payment Codes. We file the correct form for each case.
Can you handle TDS notices or defaults?
Yes — default notices, short payment demands, and TRACES/26AS mismatches are handled end-to-end, including under the new Act's transition provisions.
